Also use to identify and compare to the objectives and priorities of participants. If time permits, you can list participants’ learning objectives on flip charts before viewing this overhead.

This workshop is designed to help you better understand:

· the nature, interaction, complexity and shortcomings of institutions responding to humanitarian crises

· the priorities, responses and limitations of the news media, government policymakers and humanitarian organizations

· how to analyze news media coverage and influence in complex emergencies

4. Icebreaker #1: Perceptions, beliefs and experience with the media

Use this at the beginning of the workshop to acquaint participants with each other and to identify both their positive and negative perceptions of the news media. Note and categorize participants’ responses on flip chart paper. (This will take 15-20 minutes, if 1 minute is allowed per participant).

· Introduce yourself
· Share one or two experiences with or beliefs about the news media

5. Icebreaker #2: Experience and impact of the news media

This will take a bit longer than icebreaker #1, and should be used with more experienced participants. It should offer rich reference material throughout the workshop and bring immediacy to the topic.

Respond to one of the following:

· How has the news media influenced or impacted your work, or your agency’s work in the past?

· What is your experience with the news media?

· What are your perceptions about the news media?
