Theft of crops and food aid have been significant in Angola, Mozambique, Sudan and Ethiopia in recent years. So has the obtaining of crops under duress. It should be remembered that populations trying to survive will often include armies. War itself can be a kind of survival strategy, when it takes the form of raiding for food and livestock.
