Job evaluation and classification is a system of comparing different jobs to provide a basis for a grading and a pay structure. The idea is to evaluate the job and not the person who is doing the job. Non-discriminatory job evaluation should lead to a payment system within which work of equal value receives equal pay regardless of sex.
The purpose of job evaluation is to establish the value of jobs in a hierarchy, notably for the purpose of devising an appropriate pay structure. The process involves evaluating one job in relation to others by means of a weighting system for the various elements of the jobs compared.
Job classification is a set of categories used to classify jobs in a particular enterprise or organization. In a job classification scheme, individual jobs are graded by reference to benchmark jobs and grade descriptions.
