UNIT THREE: BODY SYSTEMS

OBJECTIVES

By the end of this unit, students should be able to;

1. State the major functions of different body systems

2. Give health problems associated with each body system.

3. Name the cause, prevention and treatment of various disorders associated with different body systems.

4. Practice habits that promote good functioning of the body systems.

5. Demonstrate ways of teaching body systems in relation to health body systems.

TOPICS

1. Musculo-skeletal system

(a) Review of the main components and functions of the human musculo skeletal system; ligaments, bones, tendons and muscules i.e.

(i) major bones of human skeleton and muscles attached to them.
(ii) main functions of the musculo - skeletal system e.g.

- protection,
- locomotion
- movement
- muscle attachment
- support.

(b) Disorders of the musculo-skeletal system; causes, prevention and treatment of:

- fractures
- sprains
- dislocations

(c) Correct posture while lifting heavy objects, reading etc. .
(d) Importance of regular exercises
(e) Polio and its prevention
(f) Feeding and its effects on the development of bones and muscles.

2. Digestive system.

(a) Review of the components and functions of the human digestive system.
(b) Types of digestive disorders and their causes

- diarrhoea
- constipation.
- heart burns, indigestion etc.
- intestinal obstruction
- vomiting
- ulcers (gastric and peptic)

(c) Prevention and treatment of digestive disorders.

(i) Importance of using clean utensils
(ii) Eating habits and their effects on digestion

(d) Worms that infect the digestive system e.g. tapeworm, hookworm, roundworm etc.

- Signs of worm infestation
- Treatment and prevention of worm infestation

3. Respiratory system

(a) Review of the components and function of the respiratory system
(b) Mention of various respiratory disorders

- Bronchitis, flu, common cold, T.B (Pulmonary) lung cancer, etc...

(c) Risk factors that expose one to respiratory infections and their prevention;

- smoking
- working in dusty environments
- effects of dangerous chemicals. e.g asbestos
- soot

(d) Brief discussion of the prevention and treatment of respiratory diseases.

4. Circulatory system.

(a) Review of the components and functions of the circulatory system.
(b) Health problems associated with the circulatory system, their causes and prevention.

- heart failure
- heart attack
- blood clotting in the blood vessels
- constriction and dilation of blood vessels
- high blood pressure
- diabetes
- swelling of lymph glands

(c) Maintaining a healthy circulatory system

- regular exercises
- limiting consumption of alcoholic drinks
- regulate consumption of fatty foods
- limit salt and sugar intake.

(d) Care of patients with circulatory complications

- use of proper diet
- avoid exciting the patient
- give them proper rest
- appropriate exercises

5. Nervous system

(a) Review of organs and functions of the nervous system.
(b) Organs associated with the 5 senses i.e. sight, hearing, touch, smell and feeling.
(c) Routine care of sense organs to ensure efficient functioning.
(d) Factors contributing to mental and nervous disorders prevention and treatment.

- excessive alcohol especially at early age
- damage through sports e.g. boxing, wrestling etc..
- lack of relaxation (rest).
- poor social relationship (especially in the family)
- lack of mental exercises.

6. Reproductive system.

(a) Review of organs and functions of the Reproductive system.

(b) General treatise of diseases associated with the reproductive system. e.g. STD, (gonorrhoea, syphilis, AIDS etc..), cancers.

(c) Prevention and treatment of STDS.

(d) Effects of untreated or inadequately treated STDs.

(e) Child delivery and its supervision.

(f) Family planning by manipulation of reproductive system e.g. vasectomy, removal of fallopian tubes, use of contraceptives, etc..

(h) Effects of abortion.

7. Excretory system.

(a) Review of organs and functions of the Excretory system.
(b) Causes of malfunctioning of the excretory system.

- dirt allowed to accumulate on the skin
- skin diseases
- lack of exercise
- inadequate consumption of water
- STD
- renal diseases.
- bolld pressure

(c) Care of the skin as an excretory organ.

8. Endocrine system

(a) Review of organs and function of endocrine system-hormones and their functions.
(b) Relationship between hormones and functioning of physiological processes.
(c) Disorders resulting from excessive or inadequate production of hormones e.g

- in growth and development of the child
- lack of iodine
- regulation of sugar (insulin and diabetes)
- fright adrenaline.
- stress

(d) Management of patients with endocrine disorders.
