Changes in the Leadership & Influence Course

Following is a list of the major changes from the 1983 version of this course.

The Influence Plan was emphasized by:

- adding a hypothetical influence plan for a subordinate and a supervisor to give participants concrete examples of what to include in their plans (introduced in Unit II)

- assigning times at the end of each unit to allow participants to update their plans

- having instructors review and provide comments about each person's Influence Plan at some time during the first day and a half of class

- awarding 40 points to each student who has demonstrated an understanding of the course content through his or her work on the Influence Plan

Added a list of Course Topics to Unit I for class members to use as a resource throughout the course.

Deleted the unit on Interpersonal Relations in Emergency Management. Material on Effective Communication is now in Unit VI, Exercising Leadership, while material on Role Clarification/Negotiation is in Unit IV, Conflict.

Deleted the material on transactional analysis.

For the group exercise, "Hospital Crisis Team," participants are given another, more detailed description for each person after they have chosen the survivor. Then each group analyzes whether the additional information affected their initial selection.

Increased the time allotted to the unit on Personal Styles.

Added information to the unit on Personal Styles about how people with different styles interact with each other.

Added references tying this content to the Decision Making and Problem Solving course.

Deleted the section called Film Analysis of Influence Styles.

Increased the time allotted to the unit on Exercising Leadership.

Added the 27-minute version of "Leadership and the One-Minute Manager" (a videotape by Ken Blanchard) to the unit on Exercising Leadership.

Replaced the Lead Self instrument with the Leader Behavior Analysis II instrument since the latter uses the most up-to-date terminology for situation leadership.

Added discussion questions throughout the course to encourage participation from the class.

Added an activity asking participants to role play a strategy they have developed for motivating a person in an emergency management situation.

Replaced the previous material on motivation with a discussion of a person's need for Achievement, Affiliation, Competence, and/or Power.

Added instructions and worksheets for the Bixby County videotape analysis.

Included copies of activity worksheets from the Student Manual in the Instructor Guide.
