I haven't seen this before, and I'm not sure if it's happening in
our toplevel greenstone configure script or if it is in one of the
third-party packages (eg wvWare, pdftohtml).

You could try to tell configure what to use by using the "CPP" environment
variable. Eg try:
gsdl$ CPP="gcc -E" ./configure

hopefully then it will correctly configure and you can compile it.

GSDL 2.38 was tested on solaris but the only solaris machine I had
access to was part of's compile farm, and I think
it might have had too many "GNU-y" tools installed to test everything
