I've been doing exactly this without a problem. I've actually been
re-building/updating collections using this method without a problem as
well.

We build our collection locally on Windows and then upload to a UNIX
server where the materials are simply searched and downloaded, but
not built. Can we upgrade just the local Windows machine to 2.60 and
leave 2.5x on the UNIX box?
