Are you running greenstone on your local desktop, or are you
running it ssh'd into another computer? Because the Greenstone GLI frontend
is graphical, if you are using SSH then you will need to make sure that
you are forwarding the X11 graphics protocol between your desktop and the
server. You can do this by running ssh with the -X option, or -Y if the
server is on your local network. Note that the default sshd config file in
debian does not allow X11 forwarding, which will be your problem if your
server is running debian.

If you are using ssh, you'll have to get the admin of the debian box to
modify /etc/ssh/sshd_config and change/add:

X11Forwarding yes

If you aren't using ssh, then there is some other problem with your
desktop setup and java, I think.
