You can simply use the backslash character "" as an escape character.
For example, if part of your format statement was:

<td valign="top">[dc.Title]</td>

then you'd change it to:

<td valign="top">[[dc.Title]]</td>

for square brackets or

<td valign="top">{[dc.Title]}</td>

for curly brackets.
