Excellent! I'd been toying with a similar idea for the navigation
buttons, to ensure a more uniform use of fonts.

We've seen problems with 1 x 1 pixel background images in other
web-based applications, including painfully slow rendering on some
platforms. You might drop in a 10 x 10 solid image and see whether
that helps.

Otherwise, you might try setting the background through the style
sheet, without the image. Might get variable results on different
browsers, though.
