I don't think you can do this easily.

I rebuild the gsarch collection every month, and I keep all the
archives in the import directory. However, this is practical since
the mail list files don't take up much disk space (only 5 MB or so).

Also remember that if you use the Collector, the import directory gets
added to the collection archive and then the import directory is cleaned.
