The Magan Chulah illustrated in BP5 on page 11 is the T. Kallupatti model produced by the Ghandhiniketan Ashram (at T. Kallupatti, Madurai, Tamil Nadu, India 626702). Our apologies are due for not pointing this out.
The pottery unit at the Ashram produces the stoves which are sold through their co-operative shops in the area. In the past ten years over 12,000 stoves have been sold mainly to households in villages and small towns. The users are pleased with the cheap (US$ 3), long lasting (up to 8 years) stoves which remove the smoke and can save fuel when the baffle underneath the second pot is installed correctly.
The Ashram is presently involved in training other stove producers to spread this successful model as part of a new government programme.
