More information: checking in gsdl/packages/isis-gdl/config.log, I see this:

Now, libstdc++.so.5 is definitely in /usr/local/lib, and even adding
LDFLAGS=-L/usr/local/lib made no difference. So I remain mystified, and
humbly beseech any expert out there to send advice.
