Subject | [greenstone-users] About Virus, Trojans and Spyware. |
To listmembers and support,
It is obvious that listmembers are bothered by Virus/Trojans and Spyware too from time to time and I would like to give some advice: I you use windows XP check out that you have ?Service Pack 1? (SP1) installed and keep up with the windows updates that MS offer ? they are important ! The latest came just a few days ago. Enable windows build in Firewall or get a free to use like; 'ZoneAlarm'. You are NOT protected from all Trojan by a Firewall. Avoid pop up windows by installing an anti-pop up application: MS has one which is fee to use: http://toolbar.msn.com/ - pop ups can start up damaging scripting to your PC as well as opening new windows ! Antivirus/Trojans (all free of charge): Always have one permanent/resident Antivirus program installed on your PC and keep it updated from the web all the time. AVG-Antivirus has a free of charge version: AVG 6.0 Basic Free Edition ( http://www.grisoft.com ) NEVER trust just one antivirus program vendor, even if you pay for it: Do regular online scannings of your system as a supplement to the permanent one: http://www.kaspersky.com/remoteviruschk.html (check single files) http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/com/activescan_principal.htm http://security.symantec.com/ssc/home.asp?j=1&langid=ie&venid=sym&plfid=23&pkj=UVSFZOGIJPUVGCWETOM http://us.mcafee.com/root/register.asp? The best free of charge download antivirus scan at the moment is from MicroWorld: http://www.mwti.net/antivirus/free_utilities.asp
Spyware (all free of charge): Install all these 3 programs: Ad-Aware 6.0: http://www.lavasoft.de/support/download/ Spybot ? search and destroy: http://download.com.com/3000-8022-10289035.html?tag=lst-0-2 SpywareGuard: http://www.wilderssecurity.net/spywareguard.html Be careful about installing anti-spyware programs
