Either way, the issue is with gdbm not greenstone. When in doubt - rebuild.
I am guessing that this issue dissapears with greenstone 3? because it uses a different indexing/search appliance.

I thought the gdbm files were only affected by endianness, but
I've also encountered gdbm files not working when moved from one computer to another even when both were the same endianness and using the same version of gdbm (this was between linux on x86 and freebsd on x86).
I'm not sure quite what the problem is, unfortunately.
