Thanks for the tip. As it turns out, my machine is a single core 32-bit processor. In the past few hours though I have been able to get Greenstone compiled, installed, and running. I haven't tracked down the real reason why it's working now and wasn't before, but I did a complete system update via Yast (including my kernel), and (after a few more missing dependancy installs) it compiled correctly. I'm happy with that result and don't think I'll go into the forensics of figuring out why it didn't work before. Thank you,

Jay -- I don't know if this has any bearing on your issue. When I installed the binary version on Ubuntu, it turned out that I was on a 64-bit processor and there were compatibility libraries needed for the 32-bit build. What I don't know is whether there would be any special libraries to needed to build for 64-bit. Also, I don't know if you have a 64-bit processor. It's almost like configure is looking for a symlink to the package that is MIA. Could that be the problem? I think that if configure get bolluxed up looking for glib, then you won't get wv to build. BTW -- I looked up your site. Looks like good work going on there. I work with FAMVIN (http://famvin.org) which is primarily Roman Catholic -- but we work with people all around the globe in remote areas as well. (Vincentian priests and brother, Daughters of Charity, St. Vincent de Paul society, etc). peace,
