Subject [greenstone-devel] Rendering special characters
Hello All,
After multiple builds, I'm still losing all the diacritics from non English
names when building a library. I've searched the archives and nobody else
seems to have had a similar problem, so I fear I'm missing something simple
and perhaps obvious.

I've tried this on three different computers. One is a laptop running mac os
x 10.3. One is an iMac running os x 10.3. One is redhat linux 9.0. All
the builds are from the same HTML source files. While the primary language
of the library is English, my source files contain characters like umlauts
and accent marks from a variety of languages. All of them are rendered
using HTML markup (;Oslash& for example). Each build is done with exactly
the same settings from GLI.

On the Redhat 9 and the iMac, any character with a diacritical mark is
removed from the library. So Bildřen becomes Bilden. Göritz beomes Gritz.
Gábór becomes Gbr. Oddly enough, using the same HTML source files, the
laptop renders the special characters without a problem. Unfortunately, I
can't use the laptop as the library server.

One error message repeats itself in the problem builds:

Buildcol.pl> Wide character in print at /usr/local/gsdl
perllib/mgbuildproc.pm line 519

I suspect this message points me to the problem, but can't interpret it.

Any help would be more than welcomed. I can provide URL's and build logs to
anyone willing to help me troubleshoot this.

Thanks for any help,
