3.6.1.1 Responsibility for AMDAL

Overall coordination of the AMDAL process is the responsibility of BAPEDAL. BAPEDAL provides guidance and monitors implementation.

Authority for implementation of environmental management in general, and for AMDAL in particular, is currently assigned to the sectoral government departments and agencies at the central level, and to the governments of the 27 provinces and special administrative areas.

The government regulation concerning AMDAL (PP51/1993) establishes an AMDAL commission in each department, agency, or provincial government. The tasks of the commissions include the evaluation of the various AMDAL documents required. The membership composition and work procedures for the commissions are specified by BAPEDAL.

A "technical team'' of departmental or agency staff may be formed to assist each commission.
