6.2.2.1 Fertilizer industry
The main positive socio-economic impact due to the fertilizer
industry is that it is critical to achieving the level of agricultural
production needed to feed the rapidly growing world population. However,
negative environmental impacts from fertilizer production can be severe (Table
6.1, pages 143-146). Wastewaters, which may be highly acidic or alkaline
depending on the type of plant, and may contain ammonium compounds, metals,
urea, and elevated levels of BOD, are the major
problem.
