Chad is also located within the Lapeysonnie Meningitis belt. It has in the past experienced several epidemics as in 1983 with 3952 reported cases. This epidemic had striken the south-western part of the country.
The 1988 epidemic began in February in N'Djamena. Contrary to what happened in the two other countries, Ethiopia and on a minor scale in the Sudan, no epidemic occurred in 1989.
