Summary: Brief outline of the reasons for Russian (imperial and Soviet) involvement in Afghanistan. “There are two historical lessons to be drawn from the Russian experience. One was drawn by a Russian general in 1923, more than 50 years before the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. He observed: ‘The country is extremely well adapted to passive resistance. Its mountainous nature and the proud and freedom-loving character of its people, combined with the lack of adequate roads, makes it very difficult to conquer and even harder to hold.’ Or, to put it another way, you can take the country, but you can’t keep it and you can’t do anything with it.”—(p. 229). |
