Summary: “’Zelgen” bound fields—common field systems can be found in several valleys of the Afghan Hindu Kush (especially on the northern slope in the region of Qataghan. Compared with the Himalaya the ‘Zelgen’ systems in the Hindu Kush show the following characteristics: They occur from the foothills up to the highest fields, i.e. in all altitudes of the inhabited mountains there are various ‘Zelgen’ systems; irrigated as well as dry fields are divided into ‘Zelgen’. The paper describes the main types of ‘Zelgen’ systems: 1) Systems in the dry farming land of the northern foothills of the Hindu Kush; (2) Systems in the irrigated land of the lower and middle valleys; (3) systems in the irrigated land of the upper valleys. These ‘Zelgen’ systems are distinguished mainly by their basal crop rotations with or without fallow periods”—Summary. |
