Animal Power- Renaissance of a Traditional Technology
The second GATE film is now available. It describes a GATE project to improve and disseminate animal power technology in West Africa, as a possible alternative to mechanization in the field of small scale agriculture and food processing.
The term "animal power" covers all technical facilities which
utilize the muscle power of draft animals to power machines. Animal power
systems have been used in various
cultures for centuries as an important aid
in agriculture, e.g. in Egypt, India and Morocco. However, in many regions of
the world they are unknown, even though they could make a profitable
contribution to the mechanization of small farms there.
For several years GATE has been working in the field of animal powered systems, especially in animal power for milling and water lifting.
The film shows the introduction of this technology in Senegal, its introduction to the women in the villages as well as to local craftsmen, and the cooperation undertaken in this field with the GATE partner organization ENDA in Dakar.
Besides the project activities in Senegal it contains a historical review of the tradition of animal powered systems in Egypt.
