Note to the reader from the UNU

The objective of the United Nations University Programme on Mega-cities and Urban Development, initiated in 1990, is to examine the social, economic, and environmental consequences of the development of large metropolitan agglomerations, particularly in developing countries.

Following the release of Mega-city Growth and the Future (Tokyo: UNU Press, 1994), Emerging World Cities in Pacific Asia (Tokyo: UNU Press, 1996), and The Mega-city in Latin America (Tokyo: UNU Press, 1996), this book provides new insights into emerging mega-cities and urban development trends in Africa.
