Rice hull gasification could be an important source of power generation in developing countries. However, several substantial problems still exist. This book will analyse all existing problems in the field of rice hull gasification. It is a comprehensive treatment of the physical and chemical properties of rice hulls as well as general aspects of gasification which do not only apply to rice hulls. The theoretical aspects of gasification as well as the past and present praxis are treated equally in this work.

Small Scale Gas Producer-Engine Systems
Based on a broad analysis of roughly 600 papers, and a survey of over 400 institutions, government agencies and individuals in 63 countries, this book gives a comprehensive overview of all aspects of gasification of many biomass fuels. Special attention is given to the analysis of performance data for small scale gas producer-engine systems and their gas cleaning trains. The book is intended as a guideline and information resource for planners and engineers working in this field.

Volunteers in Asia, publisher of the Appropriate Technology Sourcebook Volumes One and Two, is offering microfiche reproductions of its comprehensive appropriate technology reference library. This collection of 872 practical books and plans includes every page of more than 80 percent of the publications reviewed in the Sourcebook, plus 125 new titles - a total number of more than 120,000 pages of material. This entire library is now available for less than one-tenth the cost of a comparable paper collection.
The selection of materials included in the set is based upon nearly a decade of research directed to towards locating the most practical reference publications in the field of appropriate technology. Reviews of these materials have been published in the Appropriate technology Sourcebook, 40,000 copies of which are currently in use in 125 countries. Because the Sourcebook serves to index and organize the set, groups using the microfiche library are saved from investigating time in the document classification normally needed for a library of this size.

Towns seen from a new angle

The book is subtitled "Contributions on Urban Ethnology" and is a publication of the Swiss Ethnological Society, which held a seminar at the end of 1981 on the subject of urban ethnology. The contributions have now been put together to make up this book.
The extensive sections into which the book is subdivided deal with urban ethnology in general, urbanisation and the growth of towns, migrations and minorities in Europe and Papua New Guinea, as well as townscapes and utopian cities. Section two and parts of section three, in particular, deal with urbanisation problems in Third World countries. Duala, Dacca and Bujumbura, to mention only three typical instances. The contributions provide information which goes beyond mere topical aspects of development policies and can supply valuable suggestions and food for thought for many readers. It is not, however, a handbook of set recipes for dealing with people and problems in the Third World. It is a book to be read when the reader can permit himself the luxury of taking time to think things over.
The individual contributions in the book are provided with detailed bibliographical notes and, a welcome feature for those who desire further information, a separate appendix containing the addresses of the individual authors.

Ecodevelopment Concepts, projects, strategies

This volume offers a significant contribution to the growing stream of writing on ecodevelopment. It provides a cross-section of first hand accounts of actual or potential ecodevelopment projects in several developing countries.
Ecodevelopment is understood as an alternative policy of economic development that takes care of environmental limits and that is logically sound. The contributions in this volume deal both with the theory of ecodevelopment and aspects of applying it. The principal issues centre on theoretical structure, agriculture, agro-industry, project planning, political implementation, and on the relationship between industrialized and developing nations.
As Ignacy Sachs states in his preface: "A common although sometimes inexplicit thread running through many essays in this book, is the commitment to activism and social experimentation even under adverse conditions. It would be too facile to sit idle while bemoaning the absence of a favourable global setting. GATE is not only the name of this quarterly. It aIso stands for German Appropriate Technology Exchange, founded in 1978 as a special division (Division 21) of the government-owned Deutsche Gesellschaft fhnische Zusammenarbeit (GTZ) GmbH (German Agency for Technical Cooperation).

Tasks

GATE is a centre for the dissemination and promotion of appropriate technologies for developing countries.

GATE defines "appropriate technologies" as those which appear particularly apposite in the light of economic, social and cultural criteria. They should contribute to socio-economic development whilst ensuring optimal utilization of resources and minimal detriment to the environment. Depending on the case at hand a traditional, intermediate or highly-developed technology can be the "appropriate" one.

Activities

GATE focusses its work on three key areas:

- Technology exchange (Section 211): Collecting, processing and disseminating information on technologies appropriate to the needs of the developing countries; ascertaining the technological requirements of Third World countries; support in the form of personnel, material and equipment to promote the development and adaptation of technologies for developing countries.

- Research and development (Section 212); Conducting and/or promoting research and development work in appropriate technologies.

- Cooperation in technological development (Section 213): Cooperation in the form of joint projects with relevant institutions in developing countries and in the Federal Republic of Germany.

For several years GATE has been an active supporter of the SATIS network (Socially Appropriate Technology International Information Service) and has entered into cooperation agreements with a number of technology centres in Third World countries. In addition, GATE participates regularly in exhibitions and trade fairs both in the Federal Republic of Germany and abroad.

Service

GATE offers a free information service on appropriate technologies for all public and private development institutions in developing countries, dealing with the development, adaptation, application and introduction of technologies.
