|Exploding the Hunger Myths - High School Curriculum (FF, 1987, 173 p.)|
The Institute for Food And Development Policy is a not-for-profit research and educational center which investigates the root causes of hunger in a world of plenty. Also known by its imprint, Food First Books, the Institute studies the efforts of people around the world who are working to create food and farming systems that truly meet people's needs.
Founded in 1975 by Frances Moore Lappé, author of Diet for a Small Planet, and Joseph Collins, coauthor with Lappé of Food First: Beyond the Myth of Scarcity, the Institute has been hailed as "One of the most established 'food think tanks' in the country" by the New York Times.
The Institute has been credited with playing a key role in changing the global debate about the causes of and solutions to world hunger. Humanitarian responses to hunger, which formerly favored charity and development technology, now address issues of poverty and powerlessness - the underlying causes of hunger.
Member support and revenues from book sales account for 85 percent of the Institute's income. By accepting no contributions from government sources, the Institute is able to carry out independent research, free from ideological formulas and prevailing government policies. Known for their popularly written style and uncompromising analysis, Food First materials survey social conditions and development problems through a "food window," tackling subjects that range from population control to pesticides. In addition to books, these materials include a quarterly newsletter, reports, guides, audiovisuals, and short, informative leaflets known as Action Alerts.
