OBJECTIVES

By the end of this unit, students should be able to:

1. List the structures and organs found in the mouth and outline their functions.
2. Differentiate between “milk” and permanent teeth, and outline the nutritional elements required for their healthy development and maintenance.
3. Draw and describe the structure of a tooth and name its parts.
4. Explain the causes and effects of tooth decay.
5. Give the characteristics of healthy gums and describe the symptoms of affected gums.
6. Demonstrate the daily practices that lead to healthy gums and teeth.
7. Give an account of other mouth problems and their remedies.
8. Explain how cultural beliefs and practices concerned with the mouth arose and how they affect oral health.

1. Structures present in the mouth and their functions.

(a)	teeth	- biting and chewing
(b)	gums	- cover and protect roots of teeth
(c)	tongue	- tastes, food manipulation and speech
(d)	tonsils	- defence of mouth against bacteria.
(e)	palate	- separates mouth from nasal cavity
(f)	mouth lining	- lubricates the mouth and protects underlying glands.

2. Milk teeth and permanent teeth.

(d) inherited problem: cleft palate and hare lip
(e) injuries including broken and cracked teeth, bitter tongue.

7. Cultural beliefs and practices e.g. false teeth

(a) their origins and purpose
(b) their advantages and disadvantages.

- Display of mammalian mouth
- Identifying different structures in the mouth
- Construction of suitable teaching/learning aids
- Demonstration of oral health practices.
