8. Agenda for future research

Although the participants did not specifically discuss any agenda for future research on the subject of people's participation in NRM, implicit in their observations and comments made during the course of the Workshop were the following researchable issues.

1. Workable methods of measurement of people's participation and construction of appropriate scales in the tradition of socio-psychological research;

2. Assessment of benefits and costs of participatory NRM and its impact on resource conservation and development;

3. Assessment of maximum sustainable yields of various renewable resources and technological possibilities of augmenting them;

4. Assessment of the extent of marine fish resources, their movement patterns over seasons and sustainable yield levels for major maritime states and implications for participation of local fishermen in marine fisheries management;

5. Appropriate organisation structures for scaling up successful experiments/projects in NRM with people's participation;

6. Case studies of success and failure in participatory NRM and teasing of lessons of experiences for use in future planning and management;

7. A critical examination of all laws, policies, and programmes affecting NRM with a view to modify/streamline them to facilitate participatory management; and

8. Assessment of the impact of various policy instruments/ measures used by the government on people's participation in NRM.
