The following material is reproduced as an example of how one stove programme promotes the use of large, improved and more expensive institutional stoves. It advises users on how to carry out tests on the stoves and to check fuel consumption. It offers help in specifying and installing stoves to produce the meals etc. needed by institutions.

Dear Sir or Madam,
The CAMARTEC Stove Project has been launched to design, test and disseminate fuel efficient stoves which reduce wood and charcoal consumption for cooking in private households, public institutions and restaurants.
As part of its activities, the CAMARTEC Stove Project offers advisory services and an improved wood stove technology to institutions and assists the institutional management to:
· reduce the running expenditures through reduced woodfuel consumption;
· enhance cooking conditions and avoid health hazards to kitchen staff by removal of smoke from the kitchen area;
· improve hygienic conditions of food preparation through the substitution of galvanised pots by stainless steel pots;
· simplify the cooking routines and cleanliness by all year indoor cooking.
To acquire the improved stove technology, the following procedure of information, advice, stove order and installation has been found to be most effective.
Step One - Information
After expressing your interest or need for advice, we request you to forward the following information to us:
· present maximum number of meals (with possible fluctuations over the year);
· planned maximum number of meals in about one years' time;
· description of stoves pots and pot sizes in use at present:
· present monthly or yearly expenditure for woodfuel;
· size of the indoor kitchen area type of kitchen floor height of kitchen up to roof and size of kitchen door;
· kind and condition of roofing material of the kitchen;
· availability size and condition of a brick work chimney;
· existing plans for shifting or changing tile kitchen.
Step Two - Advice.
The above information is used to work out an
improvement scheme for your institution which includes:
· the correct selection of stoves and pots in the appropriate combination of sizes;
· a cost estimate to curry out the proposed improvements;
· a time schedule from order of stoves and pots up to final delivery and stove installation.
Experience has shown that the selection of the correct stove size is a very important condition to reach maximum woodfuel savings. This selection of the correct stove arrangement requires know-how and is carried out by qualified staff only. On your request, we can supply extra stove units exceeding our recommendations which you might request for security and other considerations.
Within a radius of 50 km around Arusha Town, our cost estimates (Pro Forma Invoice) include stove manufacturing, delivery and installation. Outside the radius of 50 km around Arusha Town, the cost estimates cover manufacturing and installation only. The delivery should preferably be arranged by provision of transport facilities of your institution or will be charged separately if arranged through the CAMARTEC Stove Project.
The stove installation charges which are included in our calculations cover placing of stoves and fixing of chimneys only. Other work which sometimes has to be carried out before positioning the stoves, e.g. Ievelling of floor, removing of previously used fire places or plastering of walls, will be charged for separately after completion of stove installation.
If your institution needs 100 and 200 litre stoves, we strongly recommend purchase of stainless steel pots. These pots are more hygienic than galvanized pots and they are very durable. Removable cast iron combustion chambers have been designed which you can purchase separately, if you intend to use mineral coal from Kiwira.
Step Three - Order
When you decide to purchase the stoves and pots as recommended by us, your order can be placed by full advance payment only. For placing an order of stoves and pots, the validity of the Pro Forma Invoice (usually 30 days) must be considered.
The average period for completion of an order is around three months after the payment has been credited to our account. Therefore, the date of stove delivery and installation is first of all dependent on bank procedures.
Delays of stove manufacturing and delivery can be avoided by cash payment or by forwarding a bankers cheque.
Step Four - Wood Chopping
Wood chopping and drying should begin at the time when an order for the chimney attached stoves is placed. The wood should be chopped to sizes of 40 - 50 cm length and should not be bigger than 10 cm in diameter. The minimum period for airdrying of chopped wood is around three months. Unchopped wood needs drying periods of 6 to 12 months before it is suitable and efficient for firing in chimney attached stoves. High moisture contents of fire wood causes waste of wood and early blockage of chimneys with high risks of chimney fires.
Wood chopping has to be organised on a regular (daily) basis. Usually, it is an advantage if a labourer is employed for this work since kitchen personnel tend to consider wood chopping as someone else's responsibility.
Step Five - Installation
After completion of your stove and pot order, you will be contacted to agree on the date and arrangements of stove delivery and installation. The period required for stove installation depends on the kind and number of stoves ordered. It may vary between one day and one week. Any support granted by yourself in transporting stoves or accommodating the project craftsmen during installation of stoves is highly appreciated.
Because the chimneys remove the smoke from the kitchen, we strongly recommend installation of stoves inside a kitchen with a cement floor instead of fixing in an open shed which was previously used for the open fire places.
During stove operation the kitchen staff tends to neglect proper charging and operation of the stoves when in an open shed. On the contrary, doors are closed and stoves are kept cleaner when they are installed inside the closed kitchen.
The installed stoves will be lit for the first time by the project staff to assure proper functioning of stoves and chimneys. The kitchen staff will be instructed in the correct way of lighting, charging and controlling the air inflow and the fire. Also the regular cleaning of stoves and chimneys will be explained and other questions discussed and answered before the project staff leave your institution.
Please ensure that the certificate of training and the authorization to give you advice and install and manufacture the CARMATEC stove are presented to you. If these documents cannot be produced, there is a risk that the costs and benefits of your innovation are not according to the standards of the CAMARTEC Stove Project.
