We are deeply grateful to many people for their help in developing and completing this ambitious project: the authors of the chapters, listed at the end of the book; many people inside and outside of WRI who served as reviewers of the chapters; Kathleen Courrier (former Director of Publications and originator of the concept of this book); and Carollyne Hutter, Hyacinth Billings, and the entire WRI publications staff. Independent editor Linda Starke brought consistency and structure to the initial drafts of the numerous authors. And at WRI, Amy Anderson, Christine Elias, Tom Fox, and Dan Tunstall put considerable time and effort into the various components of the book, working closely with far-flung authors throughout the process. Lauretta Burke, Sara Moola, and Siobhan Murray deserve special thanks for producing the maps and data tables.

We are also indebted to the United States Agency for International Development, whose collaboration and financial support have been instrumental to WRI's work in Africa and to many of the specific activities that form the basis of this reader. And we wish to acknowledge other financial supporters of this book and the related activities: the Atkinson Foundation, the Biodiversity Support Program, Deutsche Gesellschaft für technische Zusammenarbeit GmbH (GTZ), the Finnish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ford Foundation, the International Foundation, the International Fund for Agricultural Development, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands, The Pew Charitable Trusts, the United Nations Information Centre, and the United States Department of Agriculture's Office of International Cooperation and Development.
