The following is an editorial summary of an article entitled "Field Level Study on Biogas Burners" by P Vasudevan, S & S Jain, published in "Changing Villages" Vol 8 No 2, the journal of CORT, D-320, Laxmi Nagar, Delhi-110092, India.
Biogass generation is increasing in India and elsewhere but little attention has been given to the development of efficient biogas burners. When biogas is used with burners designed for coal gas, butane or LPG, they have an efficiency of only 30%. When used with especially designed burners for biogas they achieve an efficiency of 60%. Biogas stoves therefore need to be designed and marketed which are efficient, cheap, safe and durable.
The authors have carried out village level tests with 6 different types of stoves commercially available in India to measure gas pressures, flow rates, calorific values based on methane content, and burner efficiencies.
As was expected the results show that:
- Efficiencies varied from 37.7 to 61.1%.
- Gas flow increased with pressure.
- Efficiency was highest at simmering levels but fell as power increased although boiling time was reduced.
The detailed results are not reproduced here as the six stove models will not be familiar to people outside India and are not described in the article.
