This report is a WHO contribution to the five-year follow-up to the Earth Summit and an up-to-date assessment of the impact of environmental hazards on health at local, national and global levels. Health-and-environment trends arc analysed from the 1970s onwards and also used as the basis of projections.

Additionally, by describing how a sound environment can support or "enable" health, the report demonstrates that environmental quality is crucial to human well-being. Specifically, the proportion of the global burden of disease attributable to poor environmental quality is estimated and the environmental contributory factors to selected categories of disease described. Newly-emerging environmental health problems are also identified. Finally, the report demonstrates how integrated health and' environment policies and actions are making significant contributions to sustainable development efforts.

In brief, the report's main message is that the health of future generations and the positive visions of health and environment depicted in these childrens' drawings can be realized only if we act now.
