Function of Agriculture Department

The Agriculture Department assists developing countries and countries in transition to achieve sustainable increases in food production and agricultural productivity with the principal objective of ensuring adequate food for all (food security).

It does this by:

• Promoting sustainable agricultural policies, strategies and guidelines;

• Providing advisory and technical services;

• Collecting, analyzing and disseminating information;

• Brokering international agreements aimed at sustainable use of natural resources.


Priority sectors:

• Livestock and plant development;

• Land use;

• Water;

• Farm inputs;

• Genetic resources;

• Marketing;

• Rural finance and agro-industry;

• Farming services;

• Appropriate technology;

• Post-production systems.


Important initiatives include:

• the Special Programme for Food Security in Low-Income Food-Deficit Countries (SPFP)
