What's new - 20 July 1998 
We publish a report on a Reunión de trabajo sobre el uso de los subproductos de la caña de azúcar por medio de gasificación, held at FAO headquarters in Rome in May 1998. Attended by experts from FAO, Cuba and Italy, the meeting concluded that, while overproduction and the increased use of synthetic sweeteners had caused stagnation in sugar-exporting economies, "la caña de azúcar es uno de los vegetales de más alta eficiencia fotosintética y puede como pocos suministrar toda una gama de productos aptos al empleo energético, alimentario e industrial. Además, la caña de azúcar puede en muchas situaciones ser adoptada como un vector bioenergético competitivo e ambientalmente aceptable". Following the workshop, FAO is organizing for 1999 an international consultation on "Una agenda para la caña de azúcar para el Siglo XXI".

 Interview  FAO's Senior Energy Coordinator, Gustavo Best, reports on the potential of biomass fuels both in meeting energy needs and in limiting climate change. Also in French and Spanish
 Analysis  FAO specialists report on strategies for "energizing" the food production chain, energy for development and food security in Africa, gender and energy planning, and the use of draught animal power in Latin America
 Resources  Includes a briefing on FAO energy activities, plus reports on wood energy in Asia, anaerobic digestion of industrial wastes in Europe, and renewable energy developments in China
