Our Division is entrusted with the promotion of livestock production within the context of sustainable development and improved food security. Its objective is to increase productivity of domestic animals by making better use of available resources.
We are concerned with the development of animal health and production technologies and with the provision of strategy formulation and policy advice to member countries. We are collecting and disseminating information on animal health, feed resources, animal genetic resources and livestock production systems. We are also providing an international forum where governments discuss policies and negotiate international agreements in the area of animal production and health.
The Division hosts two priority programmes of FAO: The global programme of Domestic Animal Genetic Resources and the animal disease component of EMPRES ( Emergency Prevention System for Transboundary Animal and Plant Pests and Diseases).
We provide technical support in animal health; genetic resources; breeding and reproduction; feeds, nutrition and forage; husbandry and management; product handling and processing; specialized information systems; livestock development policy and planning.
