This is the best implementation:
<a href="javascript:history.back()">Back</a>

Using something like the REFFERER from browser headers can cause problems.

Subject: [greenstone-devel] Back function?

Hello all,

Is there a function or anything similar which records which page a page is
called from, so that it could form a "back" function? The idea is that after
browing through an item, I could give the user a single button to press
which will take him to the page (title list, subject list etc) that he
called the item from, rather than having to go through the navigation bar to
get back there.

Is there anything?

Richard
