Hi,
no user-level application should be able to crash your operating system.
Constant operating-system crashes might be a symptom of something else
wrong, for example a hardware fault, or a problem with your operating
system setup, or a virus/spyware program. (I've seen spyware programs
under windows that interfere with the networking stack.)

We develop and test greenstone and the Librarian Interface under both
linux and windows XP. I don't know very much about the windows side of
things, but try giving more information about your setup. For example,
what version of java do you have installed?
