But your first question:

I am not sure how to set just the home page to French by default, but
the following will make French the default language for your library.

1. Open the main.cfg file located in your Greenstone 2 installation
directory's etc folder.

2. Go to the bottom of the file

3. Paste the following:
cgiarg shortname=l argdefault=fr

If you wanted to specify the language for just a particular collection,
then:

1. Go the to your Greenstone 2 installation directory's collect directory

2. Go into your Collection folder's etc folder

3. Open up the collect.cfg file

4. Insert the following line and adjust for the collection's name (and
language too, as required):
receptionist gsdl?a=p&p=about&c=COLLECTION-NAME&l=fr

Hopefully one of these will have the desired effect.
