The proper way to get the environment sorted correctly is to run
gsdl# source setup.bash
(or setup.csh, if you are using csh as your default shell, which no
linux distribution does, I think).

That will set up greenstone's GSDLHOME and GSDLOS variables, as well as
set up the path so that you don't need to run commands from within the
script directory.
