Hi Cyberarian,

I've already written two answers to a question very similar to yours in the last week. Please see

Re: [greenstone-users] Changing Navigation bar 21/03/2007
Re: [greenstone-users] Changing Navigation bar 22/03/2007

The only thing you would need to change that I havent covered in those two questions (I believe) is that your navigation bar html that you put in the macros mentioned in those emails needs to display the links vertically, which is a simple matter of changing the html structure of the new navigation bar that you write.

As a generic example of what I mean:

horizontal navigation bar:

<table><tr><td><!-- button/link 1 goes here --></td><td><!-- button/link 2 goes here --></td><td><!-- etc --></td></tr></table>

vertical navigation bar:

<table>
<tr><td><!-- button/link 1 goes here --></td></tr>
<tr><td><!-- button/link 2 goes here --></td></tr>
<tr><td><!-- etc --></td></tr>
</table>

In addition, after looking at the www.nzdl.org site, I've found an alternative method

on www.nzdl.org
under Documented Example collections
Garish version of demo collection
http://nzdl.sadl.uleth.ca/cgi-bin/library?a=p&p=about&c=garish

This collection has a vertical navigation bar achieved as documented on its main page:
 ##########################################################################
 package Global
 ##########################################################################

   {
 <br/>
 <img src="/gsdl/collect/gsarch/images/horzline.gif" width="92" height="17">
 <br/>
 }
by changing the macro in the global package.

As its name implies, that example collection's visual theme is not something I would copy.

Hope this helps,

Richard
