Wow, I can't believe I worked this out all by my little self. ;)

I did a little Googling, experimenting and fearless-fumbling and found the solution to the problem in my previous email and the other problems I came across as well while compiling. I will share. :)

First, I edited build-src/packages/cpan/XML-Parser-2.34/Makefile and changed line 146 to:

MAKE = gmake

That got me a lot further through the compiliation until I got an error:

/usr/bin/ld: cannot find -ldl

I then edited line 61 of runtime-src/src/recpt/Makefile from:

SQLITE_LIBS = $(COMMON_PACKAGES_DIR)/sqlite/lib/libsqlite3.a -ldl -lpthread

SQLITE_LIBS = $(COMMON_PACKAGES_DIR)/sqlite/lib/libsqlite3.a -lpthread

I edited that particular Makefile because the last directory gmake was in before the error was runtine-src/src/recpt/.

I then ran "gmake all" again and got another "/usr/bin/ld: cannot find -ldl" error after being in the runtime-src/src/oaiservr/ directory, so I did the exact same edit to that directory's Makefile, removing the "-ldl" from line 47.

I don't claim to 100% know what I'm doing, but I was able to complete compiling Greenstone on FreeBSD. Fun. ;)

I am following the instructions for compiling Greenstone from source on the Greenstone Wiki ( http://wiki.greenstone.org/wiki/index.php/Compiling_Greenstone_Advanced ). As my subject line suggests, this is Greenstone 2.82 and I'm compiling on a FreeBSD 8.1 system.

I first run:

./configure --with-gdbm=/usr/local/include/gdbm.h

and that completes without error. Then I run:

gmake all

and that goes for a while, but it does not complete without error. The tail end of the output is:

making all in cpan/XML-Parser-2.34

Seems like "make: don't know how to make w. Stop" is where it is dying. I don't know exactly what this means; I'm not a make/gmake expert though I use if from time to time. I looked at the Makefile in the XML-Parser-2.34 directory for any clues, but I just plain don't know enough to figure it out.

Can someone help or at least point me in the right direction? I can post the complete output of gmake if needed. Thanks for your time.
