These 2 problems sound related....:

these are supposed to be the relative URLs that your web server is
configured to use for greenstone, not the file path on disk.
So web browsers using greenstone are looking for all the images and
css files in http://(yourserver)/local/sw/..../images , which I
presume is not the correct url.
