Hi,
was it actually using all that virtual memory? I think you'd notice
if you were using 6GB of swap... you'd hardly be able to use the machine
:)

Perhaps there is something else limiting the memory, such as 'ulimit'.
Try typing 'ulimit -a' to see if you have a system quota set for your
processes. Eg:

$ ulimit -a
[...]
-d: data seg size (kbytes) unlimited
[...]
-m: resident set size (kbytes) unlimited
[...]
-v: address space (kb) unlimited
