I believe you can use
> buildcol.pl -create_images collectionName

which calls some GIMP code in the /greenstone/bin/script/gimp  folder

I have had it working in the past - you need to install gimp - possibly an older version.

I'm not sure it is still in active development.

I believe instructions can be found it the Greenstone Archives collection
at http://www.nzdl.org/gsarchives  -- just search for 'gimp'
