i'm not sure if i'm getting your questions right, but you can add
arbitrary javascript to your pages via the macro.

as for your second question, that's what i actually did with regard
to german umlauts and other diacritics: added a javascript function
to the query page and an onsubmit handler to the query form that
filters the query input before sending it.
