Yes, you can have documents of different formats in one collection (they
don't need to have the same metadata defined). Please look at the two
tutorial exercises

Sorry, I don't quite understand what you mean? Do you want textual search
results, then image display when you view the document?
Or do you have text documents and image documents and you somehow want
them to be linked together?

No, they don't need to be in one collection.
You can use the cross collection search which can be setup through
Format->Cross-collection Search in gli if you are using Greenstone 2.71

Sorry, Greenstone doesn't support merging collections automatically. You
need to import their documents into one collection and rebuild.
Open one of the collections in GLI, then drag the documents from the other
collection into the open one. Metadata will be copied over with the
documents (but not any collection configuration or formatting
