the cpan modules that we distribute with greenstone have always given
us a bit of grief, because of how it tries to configure and install
them. (It uses the settings that were used to compile and install
perl itself.)

I suspect that one or more of the directories in
"/home/gavrilis/gsdl/perllib/cpan/XML/lib/sun4-solaris/5.00404" don't
exist, and that is why the file can not be created.

Try making sure all those directories exist (and that you can write
to them):
$ mkdir -p /home/gavrilis/gsdl/perllib/cpan/XML/lib/sun4-solaris/5.00404
$ chmod -R u+w /home/gavrilis/gsdl/perllib/cpan

Then try doing the "gmake install" again.
