Subject [greenstone-devel] Greenstone v2.41 released
Hello everyone,

We're pleased to announce the release of new Linux/Windows/Source
distributions of Greenstone (version 2.41). These are available for
download now from our sourceforge page
(http://sourceforge.net/projects/greenstone). From tomorrow there will
also be links to these files on our homepage
(http://www.greenstone.org).

This release features many improvements to the core Greenstone software,
including support for displaying all the values assigned to one metadata
element, a plugin for processing CDS/ISIS databases, improvements to the
DateList classifier, the ability to export multiple collections to
CD-ROM, and many other bug fixes and minor improvements.

The bulk of the changes for this release, however, are improvements to
the Librarian Interface tool. The Greenstone Librarian Interface (GLI)
is an easy-to-use frontend to Greenstone's collection-building
functionality. It provides a graphical, point-and-click interface that
allows you to gather files for your digital library collection, assign
metadata to them, and then design, customize and build your collection.
The Librarian Interface comes as standard in all distributions
(uncompiled in the source distribution, compiled in all the others). It
is installed in a subdirectory of your Greenstone installation called
"gli", and requires a recent version of Java to run (you will be told if
you don't have this, and it is a free download).

If you haven't already tried the Librarian Interface, now is a great
time to do so. On Windows, a shortcut to the Librarian Interface is
automatically added to the Greenstone Digital Library item on the Start
Menu. On other systems, the Librarian Interface can be run by executing
the gli.sh script in the "gli" subdirectory of your Greenstone
installation.

If you tried a previous version of the Librarian Interface but ran into
problems, please give this new version a try. The Librarian Interface
has been through a lot of user testing since the last release and has
been under constant development, and this version is a large improvement
over the previous one.

We want to ensure that this software works well for you. Please report
any problems on one of the mailing lists.

All the best,

Michael Dewsnip
On behalf of the Greenstone team

PS Look out for a new release of the Greenstone Language Pack soon,
containing new Greenstone interfaces in Croatian, Finnish, Greek, Hindi,
Kannada, Portuguese (Portugal) and Ukrainian, and major updates to
existing Chinese and Turkish interfaces! Many thanks to all those who
have helped with creating these interfaces.
