Greenstone-users copy of what I mailed to manju@sab.ac.lk:

Please have a look at the following page
http://wiki.greenstone.org/wiki/index.php/Authentication

I just asked about this, and it turns out that the meaning of that
checkbox has nothing to do with authentication. If you check it, all your
collections will be linked to from the main page (that is, all your
collections are visible to visitors).

If you leave the box unchecked for any collection, it means that
collection will not be visible from your Greenstone main page. It does not
make the collection itself private (you could mail the link to the
collection's start page to someone and they will be able to access it),
but it does not advertise the availability of that collection on the
opening page.

Hope this helps,
Anupama
