Michael, you can use the metadata labels as you want. If you use "dc"
prefix, then it complains with Dublin Core standard.

Thanks Katherine,

Yes Vladmir's suggestions have helped me greatly. That email that came
through from me was a actually one I sent a while ago but has just been
approved by the moderator.

You mention the two types of .item files. For the simple .item file which
just specifies top level metadata, can you still use the metadata tags that
Vladmir suggested eg.

<Metadata name="dc.Title">Item Title</Metadata>

Or must it only use simple tags such as William suggested eg. <Title> Title
of document.

Since I have already completed a whole bunch of simple .item files, with a
list of the pages, I was hoping to stay in this format. Though I would like
to specify that my top level metadata is Dublin core.

Many thanks,

Michael.

Hi Michael

Definitely take a look at the paged image tutorials that Vladimir suggested.
http://wiki.greenstone.org/wiki/gsdoc/tutorial/en/scanned_image_collection.h
tm
http://wiki.greenstone.org/wiki/gsdoc/tutorial/en/advanced_scanned_image_col
lection.htm

And there is a documented example collection:
http://www.nzdl.org/gsdlmod?a=p
<http://www.nzdl.org/gsdlmod?a=p&p=about&c=pagedimg-e> &p=about&c=pagedimg-e
which describes using paged image plugin - its slightly out of date, but you
can see the format of the item files.

There are two styles of item files, one just has a simple list of pages,
with top level metadata. The other is an XML version like Vladimir
suggested, and you can assign metadata to individual pages.

The Enrich panel can only be used to assign metadata to the document as a
whole, not to individual pages. You need to attach the metadata to the item
file, not to the images. If you want metadata for each image, then you need
to use the XML format and put the metadata in the item file.

Katherine

Thanks so much Vladmir!

I got the images displaying! That's fantastic. A solution to many hours of
toil...

Jumping over this hurdle has meant running into another however.... I can't
seem to display the associated metadata for each file. This metadata I have
entered within the 'Enrich' tab.

Within my collect.cfg file, the format statement for Document text looks
like this.

format DocumentText "[ex.srclink]{Or}{[screenicon]}[ex./srclink]<br>
[dc.Title]<b>Title:</b>[dc.Title]"

This displays the image but it is not retrieving my metadata entry for
dc.title

Any thoughts from anyone?

Thanks for putting up with my copious amounts of emails!

Cheers,
Michael.

Hi Michael,

It seems that your PagedImage plugin works fine. You correctly assume
that
.DS_Store is an invisible system file. It is created by OS X, see
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.DS_Store.
However, it could be that you can't see the images because your format

statement isn't correct. Try to change the format statement for
DocumentText
to [screenicon], for example. That should display the screen version
of your
image.

Hope this helps,

Vladimir

Hi Arthur and everyone,

Great to get some feedback, thanks kindly.

I have adjusted the ImageConverter plugin as you suggested but still

no luck! I'm not able to display the images when I preview the collection.

It is very strange as I'm getting very few errors on the import.pl.

I can even see the the PagedImagePlugin is porcessing the images as

outlined in the .item file: import.pl> PagedImagePlugin processing

"/Users/mike/Greenstone/collect/piano4ha/import/P8D45/P8D45.item"

import.pl> Converting image IMG_2799.JPG to: THUMB gif ...
import.pl> ...done
import.pl> Converting image IMG_2799.JPG to: SCREEN jpeg ...
import.pl> ...done

The only error errors I am receiving are ones like these:
import.pl> WARNING: No plugin could recognise P11WEB3/.DS_Store

Though I assume DS_Store files are just invisible files that I'm
gathering unwillingly?

Anyway if you or anyone else have any suggestions as to how I can
get these images to display I would be very grateful.

Many thanks,
Michael.
